COMPOSITIONS :
Diakids® Syrup 20 mg/5 ml, each 5 ml (a measurement spoonful) contains : Zinc sulfate monohydrate equivalent to Zinc 20 mg.
Diakids® Drops 10 mg/ml, each ml contains : Zinc sulfate monohydrate equivalent to Zinc 10 mg.
PHARMACOLOGY :
- Zinc sulfate monohydrate is used to complete the treatment of diarrhea in children under 5 years old, usage is accompanied by ORS fluids (Oral Rehydration Salts).
- Zinc sulfate monohydrate may given as soon as possible at the onset of diarrhea, along with Oral Rehydration Salts. To reduce the duration and severity of dehydration after diarrhea stops, continue to give Zinc sulfate monohydrate to replace lost Zinc.
- Zinc sulfate monohydrate can reduce the risk of children getting diarrhea again within 2 – 3 months.
INDICATIONS :
Diakids® as complementary therapy for diarrhea in children that use along with Oral Rehydration Salts.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATIONS :
Diakids® Syrup 20 mg/5 ml :
- Infants 2 – 6 months of age : ½ measurement spoonful or 2.5 ml (10 mg) to be administered everyday for 10 consecutive days (even if diarrheal episode has stopped).
- Children between 6 months – 5 years of age : A measurement spoonful or 5 ml (20 mg) to be administered everyday for 10 consecutive days (even if diarrheal episode has stopped).
In the case of vomitting within ½ hour following the intake of drug, give another new one.
Diakids® Drops 10 mg/ml :
- Infants 2 – 6 months of age : 1 ml (10 mg) a day for 10 days even if the diarrheal has stopped.
- Children between 6 months – 5 years of age : 2 ml (20 mg) a day for 10 days even if the diarrheal has stopped.
CONTRAINDICATION :
This drug is contrandicated to patient with hypersensitivity to Zinc.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS :
- Give along with Oral Rehydration Salts or breast milk.
- Breastfeeding mothers are encouraged to continue breastfeeding or increase the frequency of breastfeeding during and after diarrhea.
- Although no serious acute or chronic toxicity has occurred due to consumption of Zinc, this drug should not be used for more than 14 days because Zinc can chelate with copper.
DRUG INTERACTIONS :
- Co-administration with iron can cause adverse reactions, so the use of these drugs should be a few hours before or after the use of iron.
- Zinc salt consumption may decrease oral absorption of Tetracycline and Quinolone (e.g., Ciprofloxacin and Norfloxacin), so as to decrease the effects of anti-infective. Concomitant consumption should be avoided or there should be time period in the consumption of these drugs.
ADVERSE REACTIONS :
- The toxicity of Zinc in oral administration, in adult can occur at dose more than 150 mg/day (about 10 times of the recommended dose) during long period.
- High dose of Zinc for long period can cause the decrease of lipoprotein plasma concentration and copper absorption which can lead to anemia, neutropenia and other consequences.
- Other adverse reactions that usually happen are : nausea, bitter taste, vomiting and irritation of the mouth.
